Civility.

This post has nothing to do with home building, home decorating or the guy who builds the homes. It's about civility. At Christmas.

Most of our Christmas gifts head to the east coast. So every year I start dreading that trip to the post office to wait in line with a stack of boxes that I can barely lift or see over. The hard part is getting the two post office doors open. I have to balance (on a nearby trashcan) the boxes to grab the door handle. Then at the second door, I have to put the packages down, open the door, prop it open with my bum and pick up the massive tower of boxes (well at this point they feel massive). …

No one helped me with either door. These were glass doors so I could be seen in all my lovely struggle by the people waiting in the never ending line. In fact as I entered I happen to make eye contact with a woman at the end of the line. If she had opened the door or held the door for me she would have lost her place in line. Yep.

Once me and my massive tower of boxes made it into line, I breathed a sigh of relief, I made it through the door without mishap or any undue embarrassing debacle. Those things tend to happen to me in public places with an audience.

I was almost home free. My tower was resting on a table right next to the line so I could gently scoot the boxes along as the line progressed. Finally I made it to the counter. I lifted up the tower of boxes onto the counter and I could not see the clerk at all! That was interesting. After reviewing my mailing options and costs… I left my tower in the capable hands of the United States Postal System. I breathed a sigh of relief and headed out the door. Just as I got to the door… an older gentleman came up. I held the door for him. He seemed completely shocked that I would do that. He smiled and thanked me.

The next time you see someone struggling or needing some help or just a smile… go ahead and hold open that door and wish them a good day. It will make your day.
