Here becalmed between Christmas and the new year I'm thinking of plaid. It's that time of year when cozy reigns. We snuggle into home.
It has always bothered the Carpenter to be stereotyped by plaid. He never wears plaid to work. He just wouldn't. Don't even mention those guys wearing plaid on Cupcake Wars. ...
But I favor plaid used in fresh ways in the home. And I do love a bundled plaid scarf. For home or body... if done well (keep to a minimum unless you are decorating a cabin or a small bath) it can add just the right bit of warm visual texture. And here in the upper Midwest.. warm is premium.
Plaid used sparingly can be quite striking. A single wall papered in plaid, one chair sitting in a neutral palette or contemporary room. A stack of plaid throws, or how about a bathroom plaid tiled floor! (See photo below.) Quite beautiful in the most unexpected way! Plaid can sometimes be used in a bigger impactful way- a small bath- plaid the walls! But be sure to use a more monochromatic plaid. A way to make a big splash. Yes I said that.
I researched ways that plaid can be used in a fresh intentional way. I see plaid used in definitely "unplaid" settings! That is what makes plaid striking and not cabiney or country. This is exciting to me. I love unpredictability in a room. Visual tension. Unexpected discoveries.
So embrace plaid this winter... add a pillow or a stack of throws if nothing else. You will feel warmer I promise! Oh and don't ask the Carpenter why he isn't wearing plaid!
