Window Replacement

With another Minnesota winter looming, I have had an increased number of calls for window projects lately. We want our homes to be warm and cost effective to heat/cool. Drafty, moldy, fogged, or sweating windows are not the best way to head into the winter months or any season!

I'm always asked “what are the best”? I am not going to say which ones out there are “the best”, however I do have some good information on how to choose which window(s) will be the best fit for your home from my experience. ...

Most frequently the cost is the first question asked when meeting with customers. However I like to discuss other aspects of the job first. I will start by looking at the existing windows that are in the home, to determine what brand they are. My default is usually going to what is in the house already.

I will then assess the condition of the window(s) by looking at the existing frame and any exterior trim or moldings on the window(s) to determine if they are a good candidate for a “replacement window." A replacement window is a window that fits in the existing frame and is made out of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or a combination of all four. We just remove the sash and put the new windows in the existing frame. Very little interference to the household.

Another option is to replace the complete window, frame, trim, and all. This is the most disruptive way to do it. But can be necessary depending on the condition of the window(s). Sometimes too we have to replace the header above the window if a larger window is going to be installed.

After complete assessment/review of the existing windows we discuss cost.

Currently we are working with Marvin, Pella, and Anderson– all on separate jobs. The big three as I call them. On each of the jobs the decision was based on what was already in the home and they are all full-framed windows. The Marvin’s are going into a small remodel, the Andersons are going into our Lamar Project which already has Andersons, and the Pella’s are going into a straight window replacement job only– where Pella’s are the home's existing window product. Each customer based their decision on a few things. Cost, what fit in the existing openings, and the style of the window.

You may have other deciding factors that need discussing. Bottom line is what works for you and your situation. There are several options. All options have their pros and cons, but all homeowners usually have a comfort zone for one of the examples above.

Windows are essential for function as well as form (architectural design) of your home. They can completely update the home as well as make it warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
