a basket of potential

I've been bugging the Carpenter for a blog post. He has much to post about but no time to sit down to write. This AM is a good example of his day... he was planning on coming back to the home office to work on future work (bids). He just called me and said he would be home only to pick up lunch. His whole day got rearranged with a subcontractor no show. So now the Carpenter has to go to one of our projects to do the work himself while our crew is at another project. Every day last week he planned on a paperwork day and every day it never happened. ...

Only the Carpenter can do the bid work. I wish I could.. but my job is to market our services and brand to attract the work to us (and make the Carpenter's lunch). All the bid information and experience is in the Carpenter's head. He can hand over the actual work to our crew but this part of the business is still "hands on" for the Carpenter only.

Having a small business as those of you know... you wear many hats. And growing a small business... you have to figure out how to walk the tight rope over the transitional places- training new employees, maintaining mounting paperwork, handling increasing multiple project details- all within the same amount of work hours, to get to a place of new and improved business organization... to manage well the increased work load and enjoy a work/life balance.

This is all quite challenging.. but exciting too. And that's the payoff. This is a good season for our apple tree.. it's bending over with the weight of all those little apples... we've just got to gather them up and reap the potential harvest.
