Every day that I'm home I build a fire in our wood burning stove. I personally prefer the ascetics of a fireplace, but this stove came with the home. It's messy, labor intensive but wonderfully warm and fragrant. ...
It makes my house a home on cold winter days. And with a supply of free wood has kept our heating costs down.
So if I could.. I would have both a wood stove for a porch and a gas fireplace for inside. I would have the best of both worlds- efficiency, fragrance, warmth and a beautiful focal point for my living room. sigh.
There are some almost beautiful gas stoves these days. I think I would choose a red one.
Fireplaces offer endless possibilities for using beautiful tiles, stone, wood and paint. And with the right inserts can be energy efficient too.
So maybe this winter if you are snow surrounded like me.. you should head over to your local fireplace store and take in all that is possible. Because if winter is determined to be long, and Mr Ground Hog is wrong, you might as well make it as sweet as possible.
